About MathAmigos
MathAmigos is a group of mathematicians, educators, and community partners in Santa Fe Public Schools and Northern New Mexico dedicated to enhancing teachers’ strategies to engage and excite students about the world of math and its potential to develop skills for lifelong problem-solving. Our goal is for every student to excel in math, a critical skill for the 21st century workplace. We are also showing teachers and students that math can be both fun and practical through our workshops and classroom coaching.
As of 2024 we have hosted 25 professional development workshops for over 300 teachers in Santa Fe Public Schools, providing over 3,000 teacher training hours. Our workshops highlight discovery, critical thinking, and inquiry-based learning through sessions on math and literacy, exploding dots and place value, problem-solving, and math circles, wrangles, and competitions. Every experience is a chance to learn. Our workshops feature new interactive teaching techniques that reflect national best practices. Teachers can request coaching directly in their classrooms from our experienced teacher coaches. We have participated in Math Family Nights, programs of the Community Educator Network, and Santa Fe Public Library.
MathAmigos gratefully receives funding from the Santa Fe Community Foundation, the LANL Foundation, the McCune Foundation, and the Encantado Foundation in addition to Santa Fe Public Schools. We have valued support in the past from the Children and Youth Commission of the City of Santa Fe, and the Lorie Book Fund. MathAmigos is a volunteer team, and contributes all funds to teacher stipends and expenses for our Workshops. We participate in the Northern New Mexico STEAM Coalition, and through our team leader James Taylor, we are affiliated with national mathematics organizations including the American Institute of Mathematics, the Mathematical Association of America, the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Math Communities, Global Math Circles, the Math Circle Network, and the Art of Problem Solving.
