Lynn Bickley (Board President)

Lynn Bickley, a founding member of MathAmigos, has served as the MathAmigos lead or co-lead since its beginning in 2017, and now as board member. She began volunteering as an SFPS math tutor in 2010 and has been instrumental in setting MathAmigos’ course and recruiting diverse members to the 14-member MathAmigos team. She has built relationships within the SFPS system, Santa Fe’s mathematics/science community, local nonprofit organizations, local/state government, and the Santa Fe business community. Lynn is a retired internist and a UNM Medical School clinical faculty member. She was the first Associate Dean for Curriculum at Texas Tech University School of Medicine and Medical then Executive Director at Women’s Health Services in Santa Fe from 2009-2013. Dr. Bickley has been a long-time volunteer with, and served as co-lead for, the Interfaith Coalition for Public Education, which has worked closely with SFPS since 2013 on numerous projects.

Judy Reinhartz (Board Vice President)

Judy Reinhartz, PhD, joined MathAmigos in 2018. Judy created and now leads MathAmigos’ Embedding Literacy in Math program, MathAmigos workshops, and teacher coaching cohorts for this program, optimizing learning through literacy. Judy and Roberta Colton collaborated with Santa Fe Public Library staff to develop a successful 2020 summer program called Mathemagical Times designed to build the math and reading skills of Santa Fe’s children and youth. Judy was instrumental in choosing books, creating activities, and facilitating weekly Zoom gatherings for kids in four different age groups. Judy is Professor Emeritus and retired administrator in the College of Education at The University of Texas at El Paso. As a professor at The University of Texas at Arlington she taught undergraduate and graduate courses for pre/in-service teachers and principals, held numerous leadership posts, and received the University Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. As an author, Judy’s numerous publications include journal articles (Counting on Literature: Combining Literacy with Math Education and STEM: Let’s Go a’Wandering!), blogs, and books, notably Growing Language Through Science: Strategies That Work. Judy is a past co-lead of the Interfaith Coalition for Public Education, working on numerous projects to improve academic outcomes. She currently serves on the board of Santa Fe Alliance for Science, and is co-leader of the Alliance’s Adopt-A-School program at Nino Otero Community School, one of MathAmigos’ five target schools.

 

Alan Lucero (Board Secretary-Treasurer)

 

Alan Lucero, a retired physicist, was active for several years in the SFPS District with the Santa Fe Alliance for Science, the Math Circles initiative, and the Santa Fe Math Amigos. Most recently Dr. Lucero established the computer science curriculum for Milagro Middle School and is the technology instructor there in addition to continuing volunteer work with local STEM activities.

Alicia Ayala (Director)

Alicia Ayala has been involved with Math Amigos since 2018. She has been an educator in the Santa Fe Public Schools for 10 years. Currently she is a second grade teacher at Nina Otero Community School. Prior to teaching second grade, she was a 3rd grade dual language teacher at El Camino Real Academy. Alicia worked at both Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory in the field of materials science engineering prior to becoming an educator. She was recognized as the K-8 Teacher of the Year for the 2021 New Mexico Excellence in STEM Awards (STEMYS).

Dean Gerber (Director)

Dean Gerber is a founding member of MathAmigos and its Cuisenaire Rods program. Over the years he has served as workshop instructor, teacher mentor, and helped set the course for MathAmigos. Dean is a long-standing member of the Santa Fe Alliance for Science and has been co-coordinator of the SFPS Science Fair Project, which reaches over 3000 students. Dr. Gerber has a BS in mathematics from Cal Tech, and a PhD in Mathematical Science from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science. He was a Research Staff Member at IBM’s Watson Research Center for 25 years. He has been deeply involved in science education for SFPS.

 

Alicia Gonzales (Director)

Alicia Gonzales has over 20 years teaching experience in Espanola, Santa Fe,  and currently Pojoaque Valley Middle School, where she teaches math and Spanish and also works as an instructional coach. She has participated in the LANL Math and Science Academy, the Academy’s IrRational Number Institutes, and the Math Teacher Leader Network.  She has been part of the Alliance of Indigenous Math Circles and Bluebird Math Circles.  She has co-organized and co-facilitated the Julia Robinson Math Festival for Pojoaque Middle School and received the Rio Arriba County Excellence in Teaching Award in 2019. Her passion is showing math learners how to model and make sense with math by developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

James Taylor (Director)

James Taylor is a founder of MathAmigos in 2017 and has been the driving force behind its Math Circles and Exploding Dots programs. James is an instructor at all MathAmigos’ teacher workshops, and actively seeks out and provides mentoring to SFPS teachers who become workshop instructors. As founder of the Math Circles Collaborative of New Mexico and the Math Teachers’ Circle of Santa Fe, James has led countless math circles, festivals, and wrangles in New Mexico and Arizona. He retired after 21 years at Santa Fe Preparatory School as computer department chair, computer and mathematics teacher, and Director of Technology. 

Geoffrey Moon (Director)

 

Geoffrey Moon is an educator with more than 20 years experience teaching, supporting teachers, coordinating programs, and identifying gifted students. He has interests in creativity development, mathematical talent development, and growing equity for under-served populations. He is a Gifted Education Support Specialist in Santa Fe Public Schools.
