How Stories With Math Came About

The idea for Stories with Math comes from the use of cases in business schools in universities.  Cases have long been used with college students and they are often very effective teaching tools.  We held a 3-working dinner training session with 10 elementary school teachers and each wrote at least 2 Stories. They tested them in their classrooms and a MathAmigo volunteer edited them. All 33 Stories appear on this website in English and Spanish. Try some of them in your classroom or with your children at home – you will love them.

We identified the following areas in which Stories with Math can help students:

  • Read better and both understand and remember what they have read;
  • Think analytically and critically;
  • Be creative problem solvers;
  • Communicate well in writing and verbally;
  • Work well with other students;
  • Learn math and see practical applications of math;
  • Bring out students’ artistic talents; and
  • Act out Stories with Math characters.
